Sometimes He Doesn’t

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”

Proverbs‬ ‭3:5-6‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Sometimes God rescues you.

Sometimes He doesn’t.

Sometimes He lets you ride through a trial learning invaluable lessons along the way.

Sometimes He doesn’t.

Sometimes He answers a prayer moments after it is uttered.

Sometimes He doesn’t.

Sometimes He heals.

Sometimes He doesn’t.

Sometimes He calms the waves.

Sometimes He doesn’t.

A few years ago our town had a major flood. The river exceeded its boundaries and devestated parts of our community. Directly behind my home a dirt berm was built to keep back the river that is usually half a mile away. From the height of my mothers back deck I could look into the flooded area and watch fish swim just 30 some feet from my home. Some houses flooded. Ours did not. The national guard urged us to evacuate and even taped a red X on the front of our house signaling that we chose to stay. We stayed dry, but some houses did not.

I can’t pretend to know or even fathom the reasons why God chooses to do things. Even trying to contemplate the “sometimes He doesn’t” moments begins to baffle me.

My husband and I always giggle when I start talking about a situation and end it with the phrase “He knows!” I find it very comforting to reiterate that to myself. To remind myself that God does indeed know and has a perfect plan. My husband, a much more logical thinker always says, “of course He knows!” The sentiment is completely lost on him.

I am reminded of a song by Scott Krippayne that says, “Sometimes He calms the storm With a whispered peace be still. He can settle any sea But it doesn’t mean He will. Sometimes He holds us close And lets the wind and waves go wild. Sometimes He calms the storm and other times He calms his child.”

What peace that gives me. Sometimes He takes me right out of a situation or trial and I am in immediate tranquility, but other times he rides the storm out with me. The beauty of those stormy times is that our relationship is strengthened. Spending precious time with Him in those uncertain moments builds a relationship like no other moment could.

He never fails.

He doesn’t forget

He doesn’t mess up.

Whatever storm you are going through today He is with you! Whatever storm you may see ahead of you, he is with you! His word says He will never leave or forsake us. In Jeremiah it says,

“For  I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. (29:11)”

Although, I admit that even with those promises sometimes I worry.

Today is a reminder to myself.

He has it under control.

He is already prepared for tomorrow.

He will hold me!

No matter how difficult the storm, no matter how deep the waves or dark the sky; he will hold me! Sometimes He calms the storm. Sometimes He doesn’t, but he is always standing by to calm his child.

  1. I needed this. It’s easy at times to question why, instead of trust. Even when He doesn’t do what I think He should do…I pray to hold on. Thank you for sharing.
