Broken wells & living water

“Has any nation ever traded its gods for new ones, even though they are not gods at all? Yet my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols! The heavens are shocked at such a thing and shrink back in horror and dismay,” says the Lord. “For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me— the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭2:11-13‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Cracked cisterns. Some translations translate cracked cisterns as broken wells. Both simply mean something that can’t hold water.

The prophet writes this with so much emotion. “The heavens were shocked, they shrink back in horror…” All this disbelief because they left the living water to dig for themselves broken wells. The glorious God traded for worthless idols.

Although, this was written long ago humanity still struggles with the same woes. How quickly we forget, in a moment of weakness or fear, what He has done for us and what He is capable of. We try to use our own feeble hands to create a sense of security, yet nothing lasts. He is our Peace. He is the only Hope. He is our Joy. No matter how hard we try to manufacture those things we always fall short and end up with broken wells.

As I preach this little message to myself, Lord help me fall into you! Lead me back to the Living Water! Let me rest in the surety that is only found in your presence.
