When the wine runs out…

“Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”

‭‭John‬ ‭2:2-3‬ ‭ESV

It was an ordinary day. I am sure Jesus and his band of disciples had been to gatherings before. This day would be different. This moment would be miraculous. When the need arose we see that Jesus in his humanity was not quite ready for the need. “What does this have to do with me?” He answered back. None the less this was the moment for his first miracle.

As I read this verse this part stuck out to me. “When the wine ran out…” Such a simple statement, but so common in all of our lives. We face an unexpected obstacle, we lose our job, we face illness or we’ve let sin weave a web we didn’t expect. In every life there is a moment when “the wine runs out.” We have a problem we can’t fix. Our human ingenuity won’t get us through, our pocketbook isn’t big enough and our strength is waining.

It is here where the stage is set for a miracle. It is here where God can sweep in and do what only He can do. It is hard to shift our mental paradigms, but if we could look at all impossible situations as times to “give up” we would be so much better off. Not give up as in, sulk into a corner and suck our thumbs, but give up and let God. Stand back and watch the miracle unfold, knowing the Almighty has it all under control.

The next verse that stuck out to me (2:7) says Jesus said to the servants,” fill the jars with water, fill them to the brim.” I am sure water seemed like a useless substance at that time, but none the less they obeyed and gave their all. In times when the “wine runs out” we must give it our all then stand back and watch God do what only He can do. To many times we listen to the enemy and are frozen in fear or anxiety, but God is simply asking for us to obey and then watch the miracle unfold.

If we learn to trust Him, our deepest moment of need can be a platform for our greatest miracle.
