Angel Food Cake

“When Ahab got home, he told Jezebel everything Elijah had done, including the way he had killed all the prophets of Baal. So Jezebel sent this message to Elijah: “May the gods strike me and even kill me if by this time tomorrow I have not killed you just as you killed them.” Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. He went to Beersheba, a town in Judah, and he left his servant there. Then he went on alone into the wilderness, traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died.” Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. But as he was sleeping, an angel touched him and told him, “Get up and eat!” He looked around and there beside his head was some bread ( KJV calls is cake) baked on hot stones and a jar of water! So he ate and drank and lay down again. Then the angel of the Lord came again and touched him and said, “Get up and eat some more, or the journey ahead will be too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to travel forty days and forty nights to Mount Sinai, the mountain of God. There he came to a cave, where he spent the night. But the Lord said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (1 Kings 19:1-9)

Elijah had just teamed up with God for one of the most spectacular miracles in history. Fire fell from the sky and the people fell to their faces worshipping the one true God. This mountain top experience for Elijah didn’t last long. Jezebel heard of the victory on Mount Carmel and sent a message of fear to Elijah. He ran, and he ran and he ran.
He begged God to take the pain away, he begged God to end it all. Instead, God sent cake.
It’s crazy to think of all the many miracles that God could have done in that moment. He had just sent fire from the sky and consumed wet stones, but this time he sent cake.
God sees you. He sees the struggle you are in and He desires to sustain you. It didn’t just end with cake, Elijah got a second helping. The sustenance in that lonely place led Elijah to a cave, where God could address the heart of the matter.
In that cave Elijah had a moment just as powerful as fire from the sky. “I’ve missed you,” God said. In that lonely cave, not in an earthquake or a fire, but in a low whisper Elijah had a life changing encounter with God.
Circumstances of life may have driven you to a lonely place. A place that has no clear options or direction. Listen to His still small voice. Let him sustain you in that dark place. Eat the angel food cake! It is in this time of total dependence, where you will hear His voice the clearest. It is this moment where in total surrender you can have the greatest victory.
