Empty things

“And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty.”

‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭12:21‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The Israelites asked for a king and got one. He wasn’t what the people expected, but isn’t it always that way. We see, we want, we desire, we research and then we get, but are still left with a void.

Humanities curse has always been searching for something to fulfill the God sized longing in our soul. Far too easily we chase “empty things” to temporarily fill the void. These things take our time, our energy, our focus and ultimately steal our peace and our joy. These empty things distract and derail us from finding true peace.

The people asked for wisdom from Samuel. He said serve the Lord, do not turn aside after empty things, and consider the great things that the Lord has done.

We live in a culture of searching for the next best thing that will make our lives better, bigger or easier. Above all remember to consider the great things He has done for you. Let gratitude turn your eyes off of the temporal things off this world and onto the face of a Savior that is everything you will ever need.
