Abundance of things

Years ago in the Chicago airport I saw an art exhibit. It depicted home life in various countries throughout the World. The family posed for a picture along with all the contents of their home. Some families had a few items; a cot, a pot, a few cooking utensils. As you can imagine when coming across the home of an American family the picture was quite different. The picture of the American family had piles of stuff; an abundance of things.

“Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joyfulness and gladness of heart, because of the abundance of all things, therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the Lord will send against you, in hunger and thirst, in nakedness, and lacking everything. And he will put a yoke of iron on your neck until he has destroyed you.” Deuteronomy‬ ‭28:47-48‬ ESV

Things in this life can all too easily become distractions. Distractions can then become the yokes the enemy uses around our necks. The scriptures say that the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy. Just as the children of Israel were distracted by many things we too can become consumed with the pursuit of things in our lives. I could start a list of dangerous distractions and still not complete it when the day is finished. We are all lured by our own desires, so it’s quite impossible to even begin aiming at the particular distractions. Where we must start is at the heart. Distractions are funny things. When we begin to focus on something bigger than ourselves distractions seem to fade away. Our focus must be on God. Pursuing him must be our constant goal.

Lord, bring me to a place where nothing else matters. Take me to a place where I am alone at your feet, undistracted from this world’s glitter and games, totally consumed with you!

PS. I would love to see the exhibit again. If anyone know what the exhibit was called please drop a comment! Thanks
